A little about Wired and wireless Networks

Either wired or wireless networks enable home users to share internet connections throughout the household.  Depending on the type on internet connectivity you have (Dialup, DSL, Cable, or Satellite), you are able to share one internet connection.

Using a wired type scenario, you need additional hardware in the form of a wired router, cable that reaches from place to place, and a wired network card for each computer you intend to have connected to your LAN (Local Area Network) which is a network setup in one location.

To tie all the pieces together there are two types of networks: the first being server based where you have one main computer whose sole purpose is to give other computers access to files and other peripherals,  and a peer to peer where each computer connected to the network is able share and exchange files and peripherals with each other.

The first solution server based requires a  lot more hardware, software which makes it not typical for a home user as far as cost, a management standpoint, and hardware/software requirements.  This type of network is more suited for businesses that need to connect many computers.

The second solution is more cost effective and does not require a lot of management, and the hardware/software requirement are more reasonable.  That makes it a popular choice for home users.  This is not to say you cannot put a server based network in your home.

Some example diagrams are listed below (there are many more configurations, these are just the most common):
